In the final month of 2023, Netflix will release several well-known films that will probably be on the list of the most-watched movies on the platform. Bradley Cooper’s Maestro and Todd Haynes’ May December will be big winners this awards season, particularly at the Oscars. On the box office front, Zack Snyder makes a comeback with Rebel Moon, his space epic that marks his first picture in two years.
Aside from the newest blockbusters, Netflix offers thousands of more films to view. Even though many of these films are excellent, their placement on the site may encourage viewers to overlook them. We’ve compiled a list of December’s top five underappreciated Netflix films. We’ve chosen an action film in the vein of the 1990s, a war thriller, and a gritty police drama.
The Hunter Killer (2018)
Gerard Butler is the actor most dedicated to preserving the essence of action films from the 1990s. Butler has established himself as a dependable B-movie action hero with roles in Greenland and Plane, Den of Thieves, Olympus Has Fallen, and other films. Hunter Killer (2018) is a submarine thriller that should be included in Butler’s list of overlooked action flicks.
Captain Joe Glass (Butler) of the USS Arkansas is dispatched to look into the disappearance of the USS Tampa Bay. This American submarine was pursuing a Russian submarine in the Arctic Ocean. Glass finds out that the rebels have started a Russian coup d’état by seizing Russian President Zakarin (Alexander Diachenko), thanks to information obtained by the Navy SEALs. Glass needs to put together a group to get behind enemy lines and rescue the Russian president to avert World War III.

Cop Land (1997)
James Mangold cast four outstanding actors—Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert De Niro—in his second feature film, Cop Land, a violent crime drama. Several dishonest NYPD officers reside in Garrison, New Jersey, a small town across the Hudson River from New York City, where Freddy Heflin (Stallone) serves as the sheriff. These police officers can work in New York and live in New Jersey, thanks to a loophole.
Following a shooting incident involving a teenage police officer known as Superboy (Michael Rapaport), his uncle, police Lt. Ray Donlan (Keitel), attempts to conceal the incident by fabricating his nephew’s death. Due to this, Internal Affairs officer Moe Tilden (De Niro) becomes aware of Donlan and his team and approaches Freddy for assistance to halt the widespread wrongdoing. The scandal rocks the garrison, and Freddy must restore order to his community.
The outpost (2020)
The Outpost is based on the true story of the brave soldiers at Camp Keating, a U.S. Army outpost in Northern Afghanistan, and is set in the war in Afghanistan in 2006. The outpost’s position in a valley encircled by mountains made it vulnerable to Taliban strikes. On the other hand, nothing could have prepared the soldiers for what transpired when 400 Taliban insurgents surrounded Camp Keating that fateful October morning.
The outpost is home to 53 American soldiers, including Specialist Ty Michael Carter (Caleb Landry Jones) and Staff Sgt. Clint Romesha (Scott Eastwood from Fast X). These courageous troops get together to fight back against the Taliban and protect their outpost by all means despite having limited ammunition and weaponry.
THE LAST BLACK MAN in San Francisco (2019)
A portion of Joe Talbot’s brilliant directorial debut, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, is based on the life of Jimmie Fails, who plays the lead role. In San Francisco, Jimmie, a black man of the third generation, finds it difficult to support himself. Jimmie shares a home with Mont (Jonathan Majors of Lovecraft Country), his best friend and Mont’s grandfather. Jimmie wants to take back the Victorian house that his grandpa constructed in the Fillmore District of the city.
But for now, an elderly white couple lives in the house. Jimmie isn’t going to let up and spends his time fixing things around the house. Jimmie and Mont band together to reclaim the place, which Jimmie feels is his last remaining link to a changing city, before it is eventually put up for sale.
The Silencing (2020)
In The Silencing, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays a tortured hunter who uncovers a serial killer’s reign of terror. It is one of his first roles after leaving Game of Thrones. The Gwen Swanson Sanctuary is managed by Rayburn Swanson, a nature preserve bearing the name of his daughter Gwen, who vanished five years prior. While at the sanctuary, Rayburn sees a man wearing a ghillie suit hunting in the woods. The shadowy figure approaches Rayburn and stabs him with a spear.
Rayburn believes the man in disguise stole his girl years ago after he fled to his house and witnessed him stalking a girl in the woods. A young girl’s body was discovered in a lake, and Sheriff Alice Gustafson (Annabelle Wallis) is looking into the murder and thinks the man in the ghillie suit may be the culprit.
